A new digital tool developed by the Regional Environmental Protection Agency of Friuli Venezia Giulia (Arpa FVG) aims to provide real-time, localized estimates of ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure across the region. Presented today in Trieste, the service is designed to help residents and visitors better understand and manage their risk of sun exposure.

The system uses satellite data to deliver georeferenced information down to the municipal level. It provides users with the current ultraviolet index (UVI), as well as forecasts for the following two days. The tool is now available for use on mobile devices, allowing people to access UV exposure levels in their immediate vicinity with ease.

“This is not only a concrete example of effective prevention, but also a valuable resource for anyone who lives, works, or spends time outdoors in our region,” said Fabio Scoccimarro, Regional Councillor for Environmental Protection, during a press conference. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the Region’s commitment to public outreach and environmental health.

Also speaking at the event was Regional Health Councillor Riccardo Riccardi, who underscored the importance of public awareness in promoting healthy behavior. “Greater awareness fosters good practices,” Riccardi stated, noting the health risks posed by overexposure to the sun.

The tool is intended to support both local residents and tourists. With simple, up-to-date, and location-specific data, authorities hope to encourage safer outdoor activity—particularly during the summer months when UV radiation levels are higher and the region sees increased tourist traffic.

Scoccimarro also announced that the Region will enhance its seasonal monitoring of bathing water quality starting next week, as part of broader efforts to safeguard public health and promote informed use of natural resources.

The UV index system and related initiatives reflect ongoing efforts by Friuli Venezia Giulia to integrate environmental data into public health and safety strategies.
