Interview: Cristina Amirante, regional councilor for infrastructure and territory
A seasonal maritime transport service linking the city of Trieste to key coastal destinations in Slovenia and Croatia is set to resume in the summer of 2025, following a year-long suspension.
Liberty Lines, a Sicilian-based ferry operator, has been awarded a three-year contract to manage the international routes. The service will operate daily—except Tuesdays—from June 26 through September 1, 2025, departing from Trieste’s Molo IV pier.
The ferry will connect Trieste with the Slovenian town of Piran and the Croatian cities of Poreč, Rovinj, and Mali Lošinj. Planned itineraries include round-trip routes such as Trieste–Piran–Poreč–Rovinj and Trieste–Rovinj–Mali Lošinj.
Each vessel will be capable of carrying up to 200 passengers and 15 bicycles per trip. The initiative also includes discounted fares for families, senior citizens, young people, people with disabilities, and organized groups.
“This is an important step in strengthening both the tourism appeal of Trieste and the broader regional territory,” said Cristina Amirante, regional councilor for infrastructure and territory, at the contract signing ceremony on Monday. “It also promotes the use of sustainable transportation by offering a viable alternative to car travel during the busy summer season.”
The regional government of Friuli Venezia Giulia has allocated €4.5 million to support the service, which aims to boost cross-border tourism while reducing environmental impact.
