The regional government of Friuli Venezia Giulia is facing its most serious political crisis in recent years, following growing tensions between the League (Lega) and Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia, or FdI). The clash reached a breaking point after recent remarks by Minister Luca Ciriani regarding regional healthcare, prompting a collective reaction from the League and other governing allies.

In an unprecedented move, all regional ministers — with the exception of those affiliated with Brothers of Italy — have tendered their resignations to President Massimiliano Fedriga, a prominent figure in the League. The gesture reflects deepening divisions within the governing coalition and growing dissatisfaction with intra-party dynamics.

President Fedriga has requested 48 hours to consider his response, during which he has not ruled out the possibility of his own resignation. A key meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, leader of Brothers of Italy, is scheduled for Tuesday and may prove decisive in determining the future of the regional administration.

The rift was sparked by Ciriani’s criticism of the regional healthcare system — a sensitive topic and a cornerstone of the current administration’s policy agenda. The comments, perceived by many in the regional leadership as an attack, have strained already delicate relations between the coalition partners.

Observers view the current standoff as a critical test not only for Fedriga’s leadership but also for the stability of right-wing alliances at both regional and national levels. Whether dialogue between the League and Brothers of Italy can restore cohesion remains to be seen.
