It’s Saturday afternoon: the eve of Sunday’s main race. The sailing teams are deep in preparation, spectators are gathering, and anticipation fills the air. What better way to get into the spirit of Barcolana than a sunset race around Trieste’s shoreline?

The Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano sailing club, in collaboration with Società Triestina della Vela, return with their yearly spectacle: Barcolana by Night. It’s a one-design (meaning a single starting time for everyone, and the first to the finish wins) race between Molo Audace and Bacino San Giusto, right along the seafront, between rival UFO 28, Meteor, and Melges24 sailing teams.

This year there’ll be a race marker right at the entrance to the Canal Ponterosso, making the end of the canal a good place to catch great views of the race, though many will also gather at Molo Audace to catch the start. It looks to be a clear and warm evening for the event, which is scheduled to run from 4 to 9 pm
