PM Conte addressed the public via Facebook from Palazzo Chigi around 9.40 pm on Sunday 18 October.

Dressed to the nines, Conte spoke in his elegantly nonchalant manner. The new restrictions, discussed with local and health authorities, aim at finding a balance between curbing the virus spread by reducing social contact while limiting the impact on businesses and daily life.

The new measures will reinforce the smart-working model and involve staggered entry to schools, with the possibility of some lessons online. Both universities and high schools will have an option to decide whether to continue with distance learning.

The new restrictions also mean early closures for bars and restaurants – at midnight if there’s a possibility of consumption at the table, otherwise all must close by 6 pm.

All congresses, parties and conferences are banned.

Gyms and swimming pools will have to abide by the new rules and all amateur sporting events are banned.
