by In Trieste
It’s been a tough couple of months for businesses around Trieste. In particular for bars and historical cafes which are woven into the fabric of Trieste culture and are home to history and literature world of our town.
We interviewed the patrons of Antico Caffè San Marco on the challenges, hopes and future aspirations.
What’s the new normal like for San Marco?
Eugenia: We are living amidst uncertainty… Unfortunately, there are no clear guidelines for the hospitality sector so it’s almost impossible to make even short-term plans. But we never stop, of course. Our book and wine shop (where you can get your favorite bottles to go) are open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am – 7.30 pm.
That’s impressive.

Eugenia: In addition, together with Gal Carso – Las Kras, we broadcast initiatives that help promote our extraordinary territory and its produce. All talks, which are broadcasted live from San Marco, can be followed via Facebook and Youtube, and you can find the full program here.
What has been the biggest challenge so far?
Eugenia: Something many can probably relate to – trying to ensure our employees keep their jobs.
Anything positive about this period?
Eugenia: This past spring we finally got time to do some renovation works and map out our future goals. Unfortunately, this second round of the so-called “mini lockdown” is tougher. We remain optimistic even if it isn’t easy among all the disheartening news.
Of course.
Eugenia: We were hoping that the lockdown would bring better results but alas it hasn’t. Either way, we are convinced that it’s better to close down all bars and restaurants but leave the schools open. We are staying strong and hoping this pandemic will leave us as soon as possible.
A message for your clients?
Eugenia: Do stop by! Books, wine and our freshly baked cookies will help you get through anything.
