The lights in Piazza Unità are on but Trieste’s streets are deserted under Italy’s red zone lockdown.

While Christmas Day in Italy is usually spent at home with family, St Stephen’s day (December 26) and the days to follow are a cause for celebration. Those are the days where Italians wrap up and go out with friends and family. Streets are alive and bustling with well-wishers. It is traditional for Triestini to visit the nativity scene in Piazza Unità and inside local churches, while stopping for a capo in b or a quick rebecchin.

This year it is none of those things. Italy’s latest restrictions have put a serious dampener on the festive atmosphere in Trieste, causing further devastation to businesses, and heartbreak for separated families.

The restrictions limit domestic travel, which is regretful for many Italians, as well as for Trieste’s foreign community, many of whom are finding these holidays away from home difficult.

In Trieste wishes all its readers a happy and peaceful holiday season.
