Protesters turned out in force on Saturday afternoon for demonstrations against homophobia in our city, coming out by the hundreds in Trieste despite a resurgence of coronavirus cases in the country.
After a violent homophobic attack on a man on leaving an Osmiza in Trieste, the Triestine public were further shocked by comments from the Consigliere Comunale Fabio Tuiach on the incident.
It appears that Tuiach stated on social media “An LGBT person was beaten and out comes the case for homophobia in Trieste, we are in the electoral campaign and it happens every time but maybe he had a fight with his boyfriend over the vaseline”.
These alarming comments have been met with widespread condamnation in Trieste, and a peaceful protest has been organized to show solidarity with the attack victim and the local LGBTQ community.
Decades of efforts and multiple attempts to extend protections to LGBTQ people have failed in Italy, making the country an outlier among Western European democracies such as Britain, France and Spain. Italy approved same-sex civil unions in 2016 but does not allow same-sex marriage.
