The temperature is rising, the vaccines are flowing and the municipal elections in Trieste are finally returning. Enter In Trieste’s 2021 Mayor predictions, in which our team of experts attempts to divine which candidate might make it in the most unusual election season in recent memory.
Some of you might be following San Remo Festival and the Oscars, but we are all about the upcoming municipal elections here in Trieste which will most likely be moved from late spring to early fall due to pandemics. Get your popcorn ready and read on.
Who would you vote for Mayor in Trieste’s 2021 municipal elections?

Mayor Roberto Dipiazza. We all know him as he is the current mayor of Trieste since 2016. Dipiazza probably thought “third time’s a charm” and decided to put his name forward for his third term. He is well known for his catch phrase “Interessante oggi” (“And in the interesting news today”) when commenting Il Piccolo.

Alessandra Richietti. She is blonde, she is beautiful, she’s the only female candidate in these elections and she has been put forward by 5 Stelle Movement, which notoriously means well but does not so well in Trieste. We wish her luck.

Francesco Russo. He started this year off strong with his “Porto Franco” initiative, which is supposed to reenergize the city. He is put forward by Partito Democratico of Trieste (PD), Italia Viva and Open FVG and is considered to be one of the strongest candidates running for mayor (although, has he officially confirmed his candidature?) .

Ugo Rossi. This candidate from Udine (from where?) was put forward by Movimento 3 V, Verità e Libertà (truth and liberty movement), which promotes health and wellness. Interestingly, Ugo strongly believes in “no masks” and “no vaccinations”.

Franco Bandelli. Franco is put forward by Futura civic list. Their motto is “ballordire per attirare” (astound to attract). We’ll just have to wait and see how astounding Franco really is.

Alessandro Claut. A big supporter of the Free Territory of Trieste movement (Movimento Trieste Libera), Alessandro suggests Trieste should become the new “Vienna on the sea.” But without the Austrians? Alessandro is put forward by TriesteEuropea (European Trieste) civic list.

Maurizio Fogar. Maurizio is put forward by Trieste Verde (Green Trieste) civic list and his motto in a nutshell is to “stop the pervasive cementation” of modern times and plant more trees. Which is always a good idea, if you ask us.

Alberto Pasino. Pasino is a lawyer put forward by Trieste 2030 civic list. They look into the future. Literally.
Then there are a few undecided on the one and only civic lists and associations, such as Podemo (a “Yes, we can!” the Triestine way movement) which promotes internalization of Trieste, Adesso (now) and Azione (action). If anything, we definitely have plenty of cool names to choose from.
This of course is just the beginning and we’ll be following closely whatever happens on the Trieste political arena in the coming months. With popcorn in hand, naturally.
