It’s time to say arrivederci to long lines and welcome the digital age in Italy with open arms, including the SPID. But what is a SPID and how can you get one?
What is the Italian SPID and do I need it?
According to the Italian government website, SPID is “the solution that allows you to access the online services of the Public Administration and private companies with a single Digital Identity”. It can be used on all devices (from your mobile phone to your laptop) and consists of a username and password.
Getting a SPID may make your life a lot easier, as well as being a more secure form of verifying your identity. On government websites, you will often have the option to use SPID to log in, and in some cases for extra security, you may also have to enter a code which will be sent to your mobile phone, for example.
Who is eligible to request a SPID?
The SPID can be requested by all Italian citizens who are at least 18 years old, as well as by anyone who has valid Italian identity card and tax identification number (codice fiscale). This therefore includes expats who are registered as residents in Italy.
How do you get a SPID in Italy?
Note that the SPID isn’t directly issued by the Italian government. There are currently 9 government approved Identity Providers where you can request your SPID credentials (Aruba, Infocert, Intesa, Namirial, Poste, Register, Sielte, Tim and Lepida). Once you have chosen the provider you wish to use to obtain your SPID, simply head to the website where you’ll have to provide your details to verify your identity, and in some cases, carry out a short interview via video calll. For the full information on how to apply for SPID credentials in Italy, visit the website.
What documents are needed to get a SPID?
As well as needing an email address and an Italian mobile number, you will need to present a valid identity document, such as an ID card, passport or driving license, as well as either a tessera sanitaria (health card) or a codice fiscale (Italian tax ID) card.
Is the SPID free?
Requesting the SPID is free but with additional payment options. Each provider will offer at least one option for free, but there may be additional charges for extra verification features.
