Local newspaper il Piccolo is to launch a weekly dedication to Triestine dialect in the form of humorous cartoons, dialogues, stories and much more starting from Monday, 5 July. But what does this mysterious cinciut really mean?
Not only is the Triestine dialect a beautiful one, its pronunciation is also considered to be incredibly appealing. Rich and charming, the dialect summarizes in a few folk words the feelings, state of mind, yearnings and longings of the speaker. Thus the Triestine concept of cinciut, which was chosen as the title of the new column of Il Piccolo out every Monday, was not coincidental. But what does it mean?
“As I understand it” said editor-in-chief of Il Piccolo, Omar Monestier “it’s a yearning of some sort, like you’re not fully present in the situation.”
Diego Manna, the editor-in-chief of Bora.la magazine and the author of many humorous books about Triestine life, gave us his interpretation.
“Cinciut is that feeling you get when you fall asleep with a fat cat on your belly, preferably black, and then you wake up to that odd sensation that something’s not right.”
So it’s a bad feeling?
“Well, it can be bad, it can be good. You can be in love and feel cinciut. I mean, it all depends” concluded Diego.
We advise everyone to pick up a copy of Il Piccolo on Monday and see for yourselves.
